Are You Blogging for Invisible Illness Week Awareness?
One of the easiest ways that we can create awareness as a group is to simply blog about the different aspects of living with an invisible illness.
We are using Bloggers Unite to help us keep track of who is blogging with us for Invisible Illness Week. You are not required to use this service, but it is helpful for us!
Regardless, here are the instructions:
Get the Badge
- Right click on the badge to download
- Link it back to this web site at this link: http://invisibleillnessblog.com
- Then write your blog posting.
- Come back to this web site and in the comments section, tell us about it! Share your title, topic/description and link.
When to blog
- You can blog at any time as we want people to know about this week during any time of the year. However, here are some tips.
- Please post a blog on SEPTEMBER 14, 2009. We hope to have hundreds of blogs participate on this day!
- Each day September 1 through Sept 20th we will be choosing a blog to feature on the Invisible Illness Week Blog. You will get loads of exposure, and we hope to also inform, educate, and encourage others.
A few ideas to write about
- Remember that not all of your posts have to have the “it’s so not fair” tone. Write your “best advice” to others who feel invalidated. How have you learned to get past the remarks people have made?
- Don’t forget families and what they also cope with when one of their members has an illness. And how is it being invisible easier/more difficult for them? For example, if Dad’s illness is invisible, does your son have to cope with his friends wondering why his Dad never participates in the father/son baseball game?
- Remember caregivers. Any thanks, thoughts?
- Remember all the aspects of living with invisible illness. Being a parent, a spouse, an adult child (who is maybe a caregiver too), a neighbor, etc.
- Don’t forget about all the kids who have illness too!
- Cancer can be considered an invisible illness, as are things like eating disorders, mental illness and the list goes on.
- Got others? Share them!
IMPORTANT: We hope to blow those Google Alerts apart on Sept 14th with blogs all over the internet posting about invisible illness issues. Remember that with most blogging programs you can even write it in advance and have your post published on September 8th.
Can you commit for us to blogging on September 14th on a topic about illness or invisible illness? We want to keep track, so please let us know by clicking here and giving us your blog link.

I’ve put my first II Week blog post up at http://theiciexperience.blogspot.com/2008/08/first-details-about-national-invisible.html.

I am confused as to the request. Are we to write a blog and link back to your site immediately? Or are we to write a blog, and have it publish on the 8th of September?
As soon as I have this figured out, I will follow the directions
and post, link back, and promote!!
Thanks,
Christine

There are 2 ways to join our blogging group!
1- You can blog any time and link back to the web site as part of our growing group of Bloggers.
2- We are going to be having “guest bloggers” featured on our web site until Sept 14, each day. I was hoping to start the 8th but will this week (changed hosting ISP — it started having problems this week – ack! Bad timing!)
So you can post anything, anytime on your blog and include the “blogging for II Week” badge. And/or you can send me anything you’d like me to consider to be one of our guest bloggers in the next month.
To be a guest blogger, I need the article, with the words “invisible illness” and “invisible chronic illness” once each in the article (trying to get those keywords out there) and add a 1-3 sentences at the end that say, “I think it’s important to be involved in invisible illness week because…”
As well as your bio and link back to your site!
Thank you so much!

I blog every day on RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) a neurological, progressive, incurable disorder I have. It’s main characteristic is terrible pain 24/7. My website and blogs are dedicated to that alone. I have personal reflections, medical articles, and support information. Pretty much everything about RSD. It is a hard-to-diagnose condition because it does not always show up the same way in 2 people. The only common denominator is pain. I require full time care.

Hi! I have a team blog of over 20 women writers. I know I have at least 3 that have invisible illnesses. Our blog is a bit different the way it is set up. I would like to use one of CAtegories like http://www.takerootandwrite.com/on_our_minds/index.html
And we each blog using the badge and write about the illness etc. I want to put the other badge on the site too for the week. The one with the yellow flowers and link back to the front page here. Let me know if you have thoughts! Blessings! Noelle

On September 8, I’ll post a blog titled “Invisible, but not inaudible” (cinderbridge.blogspot.com) The first part is pretty basic, explaining what an invisible illness is and why the invisibility is a problem. Then I’ll provide a link to a song I wrote about living with an undiagnosed invisible illness.

Advisory Panel Member To Speak At National Conference
04 Sep—Posted by Jay as Miscellaneous
Connie, one of the most active members at The Advisory Panel, is scheduled to speak online as part of the Invisible Illness Awareness Week. An “invisible” illness is one that isn’t immediately obvious to someone looking at you…chronic pain, for example.
As a reasonably healthy adult geek, I knew intellectually the opportunities that the Internet provided for people who couldn’t work otherwise. But I didn’t really appreciate how much opportunity there was until I started the Advisory Panel and met Connie (she writes Brain Foggles, along with other blogs). I get migraines, and moan and complain when they’re bad, and pretty much am laid up for the duration. But I cannot imagine coping with what Connie copes with every day, and still being cheerful and energetic, and earning her income online to boot.
I applaud the people who are blogging about invisible illness, and the folks at Rest Ministries who are sponsoring this conference.
If you have a chronic condition, or know someone who has, head on over to one of the links above.

I posted for II Week on my blog, here:
http://rhymeswithmigraine.blogspot.com/2008/09/national-invisible-illness-awareness.html
There has been a bit of a debate in the Migraine community about capitalizing the M in Migraine. Per AP style guidelines, diseases are only capitalized if they’re named after a person (like Parkinsons). Many Migraine advocates capitalize the M to help increase awareness and distinguish Migraine as more than just a bad headache.
My post discusses this, and goes further to make the point that I will, from now on, capitalize the names of all illnesses to help raise awareness.
Come on by and check it out!
Be well,
MJ

I actually have several thoughts about the “You don’t LOOK sick” response. FIRST: since people don’t understand what we’re going through, they don’t know what to say (when they finally DO see us in person), and perhaps they think that a compliment is probably a safe way to approach, say hello, and open a conversation… because they don’t know how else to relate to us anymore.

September 9, 2008
Some of these invisible illnesses are from stealth viruses which are chamelion-like and ride piggyback on our hormones and neurotransmitters, and which use our internal system pathways as transports. I am beginning to believe that this “looking good” is actually a DEVICE used by the invading aliens (that sounds like I’m making light of this, but I assure you, I’m dead serious), a camoflauge-type cell mechanism that they use to avoid detection — or treatments which might eradicate them, or eliminate them if they can’t be killed. Why there aren’t scans that can detect these energy vampires is beyond me; if the researchers knew how badly we were suffering, they surely would find this as quickly as they found a vaccine for bird flu (which nobody has, yet there are hundreds of thousands of us around the globe with invisible illnesses).

I’m a bit tardy on finding out about this, but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity entirely. I posted today after a follow up appointment with my neurologist, who was the first person to drive home how invisible my illness (rheumatoid arthritis) was to other people. I live in New York City, and it was something I really struggled with, and still do, in the face of so many strangers. The post is titled ‘The neurologist and the invisible diseease’ and it’s here: http://singlegalsguidetora.typepad.com. thanks for helping to bring awareness to what so many are going through.

I have had a really had two weeks and thought the the light at the end would never come. But, God always promised that he would bring give us Son after the rain. I suffer from migraines that no one has been able to treat and rain/snow is my trigger. It has rained every day for days and I have been under a lot of stress as well since my husband has just had back surgery. I feels like I have an icepick stabbing me in my head and it wont give me any relief. So I cry out to God for mercy to stop the rain and the pain. But, I had to be patient and wait upon the Lord. He promised to send the Son in his time and my heart was at peace. Psalms 77:13-14 says “your ways, O God, are holy. What god is so great as our God? You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.” So, in our cloudy days, we can always look to the heavens and know that God is still the God of rainbows.

I am so excited about Invisible Illness Week. I have the invisible illness, Interstitial Cystitis (IC), a very painful disease of the bladder. I must be very careful about what I eat and drink, and I cannot move around too much without causing a flare of worsened pain. More than thousands of patients have IC and many don’t know that they have IC. The majority of patients see as many as 18 doctors before getting diagnosed and proper treatment. My life has changed, I have pain everyday, and my husband has left me. I still cling to hope through the grace of God and His goodness. I pray I can help others through my invisible chronic illness, Interstitial Cystitis.
